Avoiding Broken Links

Page Not Found

Most experts recommend using custom 404 Page Not Found error messages and redirects for pages that cannot be found on your website. 404 errors can happen for a number of reasons, all of which you can do something about that will benefit your site visitors.

One source of 404 content errors is a search engine not being up-to-date with your site’s content. Use a site map and publish it frequently to the major search engines. This Another reason for 404s is bookmarks from other sites, emails or links saved to someone’s favorites that are no longer valid. A 404 Page Not Found error could also be caused by site administration problems like broken links and scheduled maintenance activities.

You should check your site for broken links periodically to avoid link rot. Also, organizing site content with a pre-defined taxonomy and using permalinks can reduce the amount of reshuffling and re-categorization of content needed in the future. Finally, avoid dead end pages that have no links back out to other pages. While this does not produce page not found errors, it can be just as annoying to some visitors.
